Neither private insurance nor Texas Medicaid will authorize ABA therapy until a doctor or psychologist has made a medical autism diagnosis, so this step comes before everything else.
Argyle has no autism diagnostic clinic of its own. The closest routes sit in Denton, a short drive north, and the right one depends on your child's age, the plan on your card, and how soon you need an appointment.

Early Childhood Intervention serves children from birth to 36 months, and in Denton County the program is delivered by My Health My Resources of Tarrant County, which covers twelve counties from its Fort Worth offices. Anyone can refer a child at 1-800-754-0524, and no medical diagnosis is needed first.

The Woodcock Autism Assessment Clinic, run by Texas Woman's University with the UNT Kristin Farmer Autism Center, evaluates children 12 months through 18 years on Thursdays during the fall and spring semesters and accepts insurance and private pay.
How to choose and what to expect
- Confirm the clinic evaluates your child's age: The Woodcock clinic takes 12 months through 18 years, and Cook Children's Psychology in Denton starts at age 2.
- Confirm the clinic is contracted with your exact plan: A practice that says it takes insurance may still not be in network with the plan printed on your card.
- Ask whether a referral is required: Cook Children's asks families to talk with their pediatrician first, and Argyle Pediatrics on US-377 lists developmental screenings among its services.
- Join more than one list: Waits at university and hospital clinics run long, so hold more than one appointment and keep whichever comes up first.
- Know what a school evaluation does: Argyle ISD and Denton ISD will evaluate at no cost, and that establishes special education eligibility rather than the medical diagnosis insurance and Texas Medicaid require.
Recent Texas policy changes
Two Texas Medicaid ABA changes took effect in 2025, and both work in families' favor. Neither one cuts coverage.

April 2025: simpler renewal paperwork
Medicaid ABA runs on authorization periods: an initial therapy plan, then extensions roughly every 90 days. Effective April 1, 2025, Texas simplified the extension paperwork. The prescribing provider's signature is no longer required on 90-day extension requests, only on the initial plan.
Your provider files these forms, so the change you may notice is fewer delays between authorization periods.
September 2025: higher Medicaid payment rates
Effective September 1, 2025, Texas raised what Medicaid pays providers for ABA services. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) adopted the increase after a public rate hearing, and the current amounts live in the HHSC rate tables.
Payment rates shape your options. When Medicaid pays providers enough to sustain care, more of them can serve Medicaid families, and over time that can mean shorter waits and more choices near you.
Both changes build on a benefit that is still young. Texas Medicaid only began covering ABA in February 2022, the last state to add it, and the 2025 updates point toward a program that is settling in rather than pulling back.

Which Medicaid plans cover ABA therapy in Argyle?
Texas Medicaid has covered ABA therapy since February 2022 for members age 20 and younger with an autism diagnosis. Argyle is in Denton County, which sits in the Tarrant service area, so STAR Kids here runs through Aetna or Cook Children's Health Plan, and STAR runs through Aetna Better Health, Cook Children's Health Plan, or Wellpoint.
