Does Priority Health Cover ABA Therapy?
Yes, when your plan includes ABA benefits. Priority Health covers ABA therapy for autism when it's medically necessary, and ABA needs approval before it starts. Alpaca Health accepts Priority Health's commercial and employer plans, checks your benefits for free, and handles the approval paperwork with your BCBA.

How Priority Health covers ABA therapy
Priority Health pays for ABA once autism is diagnosed and a review shows your child needs it, which insurers call medically necessary.
- Where the rules live: Priority Health's autism rules are in medical policy 91615, and your own plan's benefits decide what it pays for.
- Who reviews ABA: Priority Health's own Behavioral Health team reviews requests against criteria called InterQual.
- Fully insured and individual plans: Priority Health pays the claims, and Michigan requires these plans to cover ABA without the limits named in the table further down.
- Self-funded employer plans: Your employer pays the claims and isn't bound by state autism laws, as federal guidance explains, so some of these plans leave out ABA.
- Not sure which you have: Your HR team can tell you, or we check during your free benefits review.
- Medicaid and Medicare plans: Medicaid members get autism care through Community Mental Health, and Medicare plans don't cover ABA.
What your child needs to qualify
1. An autism diagnosis
A trained clinician diagnoses autism from caregiver reports, records, standardized tests, and direct observation. If your child doesn't have a diagnosis yet, Alpaca Health offers an autism evaluation and checks your coverage first.
2. A current evaluation
Priority Health's ABA request form says an evaluation more than three years old must be redone. The insurer may also require a second opinion from a contracted psychologist with autism training.
3. A BCBA's assessment and treatment plan
A BCBA meets with you and your child, watches behaviors, and finds areas of need. The BCBA then oversees a treatment plan and works with your child's other clinicians.
4. A provider in your network
After a diagnosis, the next step is finding an in-network provider who takes your plan. Priority Health's policy sets no age limit, but a self-funded plan's documents can.
How prior authorization works with Priority Health
This step means getting Priority Health's approval before a service starts. Every ABA code it covers is on its authorization list, and that includes the first assessment.
- Who sends the request: Your provider asks for approval before the first assessment, then again when the treatment plan is ready.
- What your BCBA sends: The request lists the evaluation date, the test used, and the weekly hours requested, with clinical notes attached.
- When Priority Health decides: Times vary by plan, but Priority Health says all requests take 7 days or less.
- Reviews every six months: Your provider updates the plan, and each reauthorization (a renewed approval) needs progress data.
- If progress stalls: Priority Health may deny more treatment when therapy doesn't show measurable progress.
- Step 1DiagnosisA trained clinician confirms autism, with no approval needed in network.
- Step 2Assessment approvalPriority Health approves the BCBA's assessment before it starts.
- Step 3Treatment planThe BCBA sets goals and asks for weekly hours.
- Step 4Therapy approvalPriority Health reviews the plan against its InterQual criteria.
- Step 5Six-month reviewsPriority Health reviews each updated plan to keep services approved.
What Priority Health covers for ABA therapy
Priority Health's policy lists these ABA codes for care in a center, office, or home, and each one needs approval first. You'll see them on your explanation of benefits.
- Assessments (97151, 97152): Testing and treatment planning by the BCBA, with help from a technician when needed.
- One-to-one therapy (97153): A technician works with your child under the BCBA's direction.
- BCBA supervision (97155): The BCBA adjusts the program and guides the technician, with at least 1 hour of supervision for every 15 hours of therapy.
- Caregiver training (97156, 97157): Coaching for parents and caregivers, which Priority Health calls an essential part of ABA.
- Group sessions (97154, 97158): Small-group therapy led by a technician or the BCBA.
The policy sets no weekly hour limit, so your child's clinical findings drive the hours. It doesn't cover two codes for severe behavior that use two or more technicians (0362T, 0373T). It also leaves out services that are a school's legal duty.
State limits on fully insured Priority Health plans
| State | What state law allows |
|---|---|
| Michigan | The state insurance regulator says insurers may not apply age limits or yearly dollar limits to autism benefits. |
Self-funded employer plans follow their own plan documents. We checked these laws in October 2026.
What families pay with Priority Health
Your bill depends on your plan's deductible, copay, and out-of-pocket maximum. The deductible is what you pay each year before your plan starts to share costs. Coinsurance is the percent of each bill you pay after that.
- Find your ABA line: Your plan's cost schedule gives ABA its own line, as this 2026 example shows, with a copay on some plans and a percent of the bill on others.
- Network matters: The 2026 HMO plans we read usually don't cover out-of-network ABA, the PPO we read charged more for it, and some individual plans use small regional networks.
- Same cost share as other care: Michigan's regulator says insurers can't make autism copays, deductibles, or coinsurance stricter than those for other medical care.
- Plan a full year: Several charges can apply in one day, so ask how your plan counts visits before you estimate a year of ABA therapy costs.

Does Priority Health require prior authorization for ABA therapy?
Yes, every ABA code Priority Health covers needs approval, and that includes the first ABA assessment. Your provider asks before that visit, then again when the treatment plan is ready. Priority Health reviews the updated plan every six months. Alpaca Health prepares the request with your BCBA, so you don't have to.
How many hours of ABA therapy does Priority Health cover?
Priority Health's autism policy doesn't set a weekly limit. Your BCBA asks for the hours per week your child needs, and Priority Health checks the request against its InterQual criteria. Michigan's regulator also says insurers can't limit the number of visits for required autism care. Self-funded plans can differ, so we check yours.
Does Priority Health limit ABA therapy by age or cost?
Priority Health's autism policy lists no age limit or dollar cap. Michigan's regulator also says insurers can't apply either one. Self-funded plans aren't bound by that rule, so we check your plan during your free benefits review. Priority Health's member page describes ABA for children and adults, and goals can include social skills for teens.
Does Priority Health cover autism testing?
Yes. Priority Health's policy treats a first evaluation, including psychological testing, as medically necessary. In-network clinicians don't need approval first, but out-of-network clinicians do, under its testing rules. It won't pay for AI devices or apps that diagnose autism, or for evaluations that are a school's legal duty. ABA can't start without a diagnosis, so Alpaca Health checks your coverage before an ADOS-2 (a play-based autism test).
Does Priority Health Medicaid cover ABA therapy?
Priority Health Choice is Priority Health's Medicaid plan, but ABA doesn't run through it. In Michigan, regional behavioral health plans handle Medicaid ABA for eligible children under 21. The state tells families to contact Community Mental Health. The rest of this page is about the Priority Health plans you get through work or buy yourself.
