Does TRICARE East Cover ABA Therapy?
Yes. TRICARE covers ABA therapy for autism through its Autism Care Demonstration, with no age limit or yearly cap on services, and every ABA service needs approval first. Alpaca Health accepts TRICARE East, checks your benefits for free, and handles the approval paperwork with your BCBA.
How TRICARE East covers ABA therapy
TRICARE pays for ABA through its Autism Care Demonstration (ACD), which is set to run through December 31, 2028.
- Where the rules live: TRICARE's operations manual sets the ACD rules, from who can diagnose autism to how many hours of therapy TRICARE pays for.
- Who runs it here: TRICARE's region list puts Michigan and North Carolina in the East Region, where Humana Military reviews referrals and approves ABA.
- Who can use it: Family members of active duty service members, retirees, and certain National Guard and Reserve members can use the ACD.
- No age or dollar limits: A 2026 report to Congress says ABA isn't limited by age, dollars spent, years of therapy, or number of sessions, as long as it's clinically necessary (right for your child's diagnosis and no more than your child needs).
- Other autism care: Speech, occupational, and physical therapy, psychological testing, and medicines are covered by TRICARE's regular medical benefit, which is separate from the ACD.

What your child needs to qualify
1. A TRICARE health plan
Your child needs to be enrolled in a TRICARE health plan. TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Select, and TRICARE Reserve Select all count.
2. An autism diagnosis from an approved provider
A pediatrician, family doctor, pediatric or family nurse practitioner, or a specialist can diagnose autism for TRICARE. If your child was first diagnosed at 8 or older, a specialist such as a child psychiatrist must do the evaluation.
3. A referral that asks for ABA
The diagnosing provider sends the referral to Humana Military. It includes the results of a standard autism test and a DSM-5 checklist that rates how much support your child needs.
4. EFMP and ECHO for active duty families
Active duty families also enroll in their service's Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP). They must register the child in ECHO, TRICARE's extra support program, within 90 days, or ACD enrollment ends.
5. Four baseline questionnaires
Before therapy starts, you and your child's providers fill out four standard forms, called outcome measures, on behavior, daily skills, social response, and parent stress. They repeat every six or 12 months so TRICARE can track progress.
How prior authorization works with TRICARE East
This step means getting approval from Humana Military, the contractor that runs TRICARE East, before any ABA service starts. It's required on every TRICARE plan, and TRICARE's autism care page calls it pre-authorization.
- What starts it: Once the referral arrives, Humana Military approves an assessment, and your BCBA then sends the assessment and treatment plan for review.
- Six months at a time: Each therapy approval lasts six months, and your BCBA asks for each reauthorization (a renewed approval) 30 to 60 days ahead with progress data and new outcome scores.
- Parents take part: TRICARE requires at least six parent training sessions every six months, and missing that two periods in a row can stop renewals.
- A new referral every two years: The diagnosing provider updates the DSM-5 checklist and your child's support level, which is a progress check rather than a new diagnosis.
- Your choice of provider: The approval letter names a provider, and you can ask Humana Military for a different one or call if care isn't offered within TRICARE's 28-day standard.

What TRICARE East covers for ABA therapy
Your child's BCBA asks for hours under each billing code (CPT code) below. Each one is checked before it's approved.
- Assessments (97151): Up to 8 hours for the first in-person assessment and treatment plan, then up to 6 hours for each six-month update.
- One-to-one therapy (97153): A behavior technician, an assistant behavior analyst, or the BCBA works with your child for up to 8 hours a day and 40 hours a week.
- Plan changes (97155): The BCBA works directly with your child to adjust the plan at least once a month.
- Caregiver training (97156, 97157): Your BCBA coaches parents and caregivers one on one or with a group of families.
- Group sessions (97158): Skills groups of up to 8 children help your child use skills they've already learned with peers.
- Team meetings (99366, 99368): Three or more of your child's providers from different fields meet with your autism services navigator, your child's TRICARE care coordinator.
The treatment plan recommends your child's weekly ABA hours. TRICARE expects those hours to drop over time as your child meets goals and you learn the methods.
What families pay with TRICARE East
For ABA, you pay your TRICARE plan's usual copay or cost share. That's a set fee or a percentage of the approved amount. Some plans also have a yearly deductible, the amount you pay before TRICARE starts paying.
- One copay a day: All ABA services on the same day count as one copay, and assessment visits within a 14-day window count as one.
- Active duty families in Prime: TRICARE's cost tables list no copay for network specialty care, the category Humana Military's provider FAQ uses for ABA.
- Other families: Retiree families and families on TRICARE Select or a Reserve plan pay their plan's specialty care copay or cost share for each day of ABA.
- A yearly ceiling: ABA copays count toward your plan's catastrophic cap, the most your family pays for covered care in a calendar year, and ECHO's cost shares don't apply to ABA.

Does TRICARE cover autism testing?
Yes, TRICARE's medical benefit covers the testing used to diagnose autism. For ABA, the diagnosing provider must also use a standard test such as the ADOS-2 (a play-based autism assessment). If the diagnosis is more than 2 years old, the referral needs an updated evaluation. If your child doesn't have a diagnosis yet, Alpaca Health offers an autism evaluation and first checks that TRICARE will accept its diagnosis for ABA.
Is there an age limit for ABA therapy with TRICARE?
No, the ACD has no age limit, so teens and adults with autism can get ABA when they need it. ABA can also focus on a few goals, such as social skills for teens. Adults who have outgrown their pediatric providers need a clinical psychologist to diagnose and refer them.
What happens to my child's ABA when we move?
Tell your navigator before you move, so your old and new navigators can overlap for at least a month before and after it. The ABA referral moves with you, so you won't need a new diagnosis visit. The outcome measure schedule stays the same, too. If your new home is in a western state such as Texas or Colorado, your coverage moves to TRICARE West.
Can my child get ABA at home, at school, or online with TRICARE?
In-home ABA sessions and clinic sessions are covered, and so is ABA at daycare when your child needs it. At school, TRICARE won't pay for a technician to work as a shadow or aide. A BCBA can work on a specific behavior there for a short time, with approval in advance. Online sessions are limited to parent coaching after the first six months.
What does a TRICARE autism services navigator do?
Each child in the ACD gets a navigator to coordinate care. Your navigator is a licensed nurse, social worker, or other clinician, never your child's BCBA. Within 90 days, you build a care plan together that links ABA with other care like occupational therapy. Turning down the navigator ends ABA under the ACD, though other TRICARE benefits continue.
