What is an IEP in Texas?

An IEP (Individualized Education Program) provides specialized instruction, individualized goals, and services for students whose disabilities significantly impact learning.

An IEP is governed by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and is designed for students who need more than accommodations.

It includes a structured, individualized plan.

IEPs typically include:

  • Measurable academic goals
  • Specialized instruction
  • Services like speech, occupational therapy, or behavioral support
  • Ongoing progress monitoring

To qualify, a student must meet criteria under one of 13 disability categories and show that the disability affects school performance.

Parents are part of the process and have legal rights to participate in decisions.
